An Invitation to Lent

February 15, 2009

The Church, since its early history, set aside intentional retreat time prior to Easter.  This time was set aside for two purposes: to reflect upon how we are using the grace that was received at Pentecost and to prepare those planning to be baptized at Easter.  It is important to remember the historical practice of Lent as we begin this time of reflection and renewal.

Our Lenten series this year is entitled “From Wilderness to Resurrection.”  This is an opportunity to walk with Jesus and his disciples from the wilderness to resurrection.  The wilderness is often used to describe the moments when we are experiencing great change and are seeking our bearings.  Nationally and for many of us personally we are experiencing the wilderness.  We will draw from many sources for our program including:  the Gospel of Mark, the sore of Mark’s community, A Year to Live by Stephen Levine, and our Original Self by Thomas Moore.
